2. DATA ELEMENT DEFINITION:

Code that identifies the type of material, according to categories suggested by MARC.

3. NOTES:

a) The adopted codes correspond to the values of Leader/06 and the types of records correspond to the definition of material types in field 008 of MARC, as follows:

Field 9 Type Description
a BK Textual Material – Printed material, microforms, and electronic resources that are basically textual in nature,

whether they are printed reproductions or produced originally.

c MU Printed Music – Musical notation, whether printed, in microform,or electronic.

Type not accepted for LILACS.

d MU Music Manuscripts – Handwritten musical notation or microform of handwritten music.
Type not accepted for LILACS.
e MP Cartographic Material: Maps, atlases, globes, digital maps, and other cartographic items.
Type not accepted for LILACS. Register in the Multimedia Catalog.
f MP Manuscripts of Cartographic Material – Handwritten cartographic material or its microform.
Type not accepted for LILACS. Register in the Multimedia Catalog.
g VM Projectable Media: Film, video recording (including digital video), slides, transparencies, or material specifically intended for

projection or capable of being projected, radiography, video ultrasound, magnetic resonance.
Type accepted for LILACS, but consider whether to register in the Multimedia Catalog.

i MU Non-Musical Sound Recordings – e.g., spoken records.
Type not accepted for LILACS. Register in the Multimedia Catalog.
j MU Musical Recordings – Phonograph records, compact discs, recorded tapes.
Type not accepted for LILACS.
k VM Two-Dimensional Non-Projectable Graphics – All types of cards, diagrams, collages, computer graphics, drawings, duplication masters, paintings, negatives and photographic studies, photographic prints, posters, technical drawings, transparencies, photomechanical reproductions and reproductions of any of them, letters, business cards, postcards, prints, studio prints, pamphlets, graphics, art reproductions, engravings, printed ultrasound.
Type not accepted for LILACS. Register in the Multimedia Catalog.
m CF Computer File – software (including programs, games, fonts), numeric or textual data, multimedia, online systems or services. For these classes of materials, if there is a significant aspect that fits into another category, code for that aspect. For example, a cartographic vector data is not coded as numeric, but as cartographic. Other classes of electronic resources are coded by their most important aspects. For example, textual, iconographic and cartographic materials, sound, music and moving images. In case of doubt, or if the most important aspect cannot be determined, consider the document as a computer electronic resource.
o VM Kit – the described material contains a mixture of components and none is considered as predominant.
p XM Mixed Material – Significant materials in two or more forms that are generally related because they have been accumulated as such by a person or entity. Includes archival fonds and collections of manuscript materials in mixed forms, such as texts, photographs, and sound recordings.
r VM Three-Dimensional Material, Artifact, Object – Manufactured objects such as models, dioramas, games, puzzles, simulations, sculptures and other three-dimensional artworks, machines, clothing, toys, and adornments. It also includes objects found in nature as samples.
t AM Manuscripts – Handwritten textual material or manuscript microform. Includes manuscripts proper, typewritten material, or computer-printed material. Examples: proof pages and proofs for checking work and correcting errors and faults, such as typographic corrections, original manuscripts of books, legal documents, unpublished theses and dissertations, and preprints.

 

a) In this field, only the codes presented in the “Field 9” column of the table will be used. The “Type” column was added only for better visualization of the categories adopted by MARC. The values presented in this column will not be used.

b) Option (a) Textual Materials will be used with the document types (S) Serials, (M) Books, (T) Theses/Dissertations and Monographs, (N) Non-conventional Documents, and Grey Literature.

c) Non-textual materials (film, video recording, and non-musical sound recording) can be identified by any of the options in the Document Type field [5], selection will depend more on its content than its form. Only in the case of physical collections, preferably select option “N” for Non-conventional Documents and include the physical location of the item. Videos, images, and audios with links to content are registered in the Multimedia Catalog.

d) According to the type of record, fields Item Form [110] to Specific Material Designation (non-projectable material) [115] must be filled out. Annex IX contains the availability table for filling out fields 9 and 110 to 115, as well as the types allowed for LILACS.
