2. DATA ELEMENT DEFINITION:
Total number of pages present in the document.
3. NOTES:
a) When the first pages of the document are numbered with Roman numerals and the rest of the text with Arabic numbers starting from 1, both totals are recorded.
Examples:
- viii, 210
- xvii, 323
b) When the numbering is sequential, starting with Roman numbers and continuing with Arabic numbers, only the total number of pages is recorded.
Example:
- 176 and not i-xii, 13-176
c) When the pages are identified with sequential letters of the Latin alphabet, record the letter identifying the first page followed by the letter identifying the last page, separated by a hyphen.
Example:
- A-Z
d) When pagination is irregular or nonexistent, record the total number of pages calculated by the documentalist in brackets.
Example:
- [72]
e) When the document contains unnumbered annexes, count the total number of pages and record it within brackets [ ].
f) When the total number of volumes is known, in the case of multivolume monographs, this information should be recorded followed by pagination (See rule 1.5B3 of AACR-2).
g) When the total number of volumes is known, in the case of multivolume monographs, but pagination is unknown, only the number of volumes should be recorded.
h) For documents written in more than one language, in the same physical unit, the total number of pages should be considered, including all versions in other languages.
i) For electronic documents, filling in this field becomes optional.
