2. DATA ELEMENT DEFINITION:

Term identifying the level of treatment given to the bibliographic description of a document.

There are two levels of treatment:

a) Monographic level or source record, in which data from the book, non-conventional document, thesis, dissertation, or journal (periodic series) as a whole is described, and;

b) Analytical level, in which data from a part of a document at the monographic level is represented, such as a periodical article or a chapter of the monograph.

The treatment levels are subdivided in the system into:

 

Code  Description
m  Monographic Level: 
Used for the description of a document as a whole that is not an integral part of any other, meaning it has no connection with a series or a collection.
mc  Collection Monographic Level: 
Used for the description of a document belonging to a collection. Correct description of the document requires information about the collection to which it belongs.
ms  Series Monographic Level
Used for the description of a document belonging to a monographic series. Correct description of the document requires information about the series level to which it belongs.
am  Analytical Monographic Level
Used for the description of a document belonging to a monograph, meaning for the description of a chapter or article of a monograph. Correct description of the document (chapter or article) requires information from the higher level (monographic) to which it belongs.

amc  Analytical Collection Monographic Level
Used for the description of a document belonging to a monograph that is part (volume) of a collection. Correct description of the document (chapter) requires information from the monographic level (volume) and also from the collection level to which it belongs.
ams  Analytical Series Monographic Level
Used for the description of a document belonging to a monograph (volume) that is part of a monographic series. Correct description of the document (chapter or article) requires information from the monographic level (volume) and also from the series level to which it belongs.
as  Series Analytical Level
Used for the description of a document belonging to a periodic series. Correct description of the document requires information from the analytical level (article) and the series level to which it belongs.
c  Collection Level:
Used for the description of a collection as a whole, considering it as a single document. The collection consists of a defined number of parts (volumes). Registering a collection of monographs or a single monograph belonging to a collection is part of an administrative decision aimed at adapting the document retrieval needs of users.
