Affiliation. Institution to which the Author belongs.
Analytic. Part of a document, such as a journal article or book chapter.
Thematic Area. Specific grouping of information on the subject of a VHL whose function is to allow the user to navigate by topics.
File. In computing, a set of data that can be stored on some storage device. Data files are created by applications, such as a word processor, for example.
Backup. Procedure in which one or more files and/or directories are duplicated to another storage device (tape or disk), producing a backup copy that can be restored in case of accidental deletion or physical damage to the original data.
Database. Collection of structured data for easy access and manipulation. It consists of units called records, whose various attributes are represented by fields. For example, in a “customer registration” file, each customer represents a record, which has various fields, such as “NAME”, “CUSTOMER CODE”, “PHONE” etc.
Bibliographic databases. Electronic version of a catalog or bibliographic index.
BIREME Accounts. User management system and access permission to FI-Admin and systems developed by BIREME.
Browser. Internet page browser, such as Google Chrome.
Category. Class of great generality.
CDS/ISIS – MicroISIS. Software developed and maintained by UNESCO for the treatment of bibliographic data. Development using this technology has been discontinued by BIREME/PAHO/WHO.
Cooperating Center. Institution participating in the VHL and/or contributing bibliographic records to Bireme.
Specialized Center. Institution specialized in a certain subject area of health.
Citation. Passage authored by a third party mentioned in quotes in a work, with indication of the author.
ISO Code. Code created under the typology of ISO 2709 standard, within the ILO – International Labour Organization.
Editorial Committee. Group of professionals and experts in the publishing field of a journal, whose objective is to establish editorial standards and conventions and to evaluate the contributions received by the publication in order to ensure a quality standard.
Technical cooperation. Exchange between developing countries, or between them and developed countries, to collaborate with each other in certain sectors, such as exchange of experts and teachers, creation or transfer of technology, exchange of information and experiences for the improvement of health conditions.
Cutter. Table created by Charles Cutter whose symbols are used to organize documents in order of authorship or title.
DeCS Server. Application developed by Bireme in IsisScript language to manage the health descriptors database (DeCS).
Bibliographic Description. Description of a bibliographic item through attributes such as authorship, title, edition, dimensions, etc.
Epigraph. Mention of authorship by a third party placed at the opening of a work, usually related in general sense. See also citation.
FI-Admin. Integrated system for managing information sources of the Virtual Health Library.
Electronic format. Any form of storage, retrieval, and presentation of information capable of online transmission or recording on magnetic or optical media.
ISO Format (file). Standard established by ISO for data exchange between institutions, networks, and users.
LILACS Format. Bibliographic description format established by BIREME, based on the UNISIST Reference Manual for Machine-readable Bibliographic Descriptions.
Glossary. Vocabulary of specific or controlled use, used in publications to elucidate the meaning of rarely used, technical, or restricted terms.
Guide. Defines the processes necessary for the production of an information source or phases of a methodology.
ID. Identification number of the record in the database.
Indexing. Procedure of identifying and describing the content of a document with terms that represent the corresponding subjects of that document with the aim of retrieving it later.
National Coordinating Institution. Cooperating institution of the VHL whose main function is the coordination of cooperating centers in a region.
Lato sensu. Postgraduate course, specialization. It is a more flexible course and prepares for the job market. It also serves as a preparatory process for the Stricto Sensu level (master’s and doctorate).
LILDBI-DOS. DOS version of the “LILACS Bibliographic Description and Indexing” system. System discontinued by BIREME/PAHO/WHO.
LILDBI-Web. Web version of the “LILACS Bibliographic Description and Indexing” system. Manual. Set of steps and operations, automatic or manual, necessary to instruct the user in a specific process of using an application, program, or methodology. System discontinued by BIREME/PAHO/WHO.
Methodology. Set of rules and conventions used to standardize a process or the production of an information source.
Model or template. File containing the basic definition of the type of document to be used, containing styles, predefined texts, etc.
Analytical level. Bibliographic description of part of a document. See also Analytical.
Treatment level. Coded definition of the depth level that the document will receive at the time of bibliographic description.
Monographic level. Bibliographic description of a document that constitutes a unit in itself.
PDF. File format developed by Adobe whose function is to maintain, in digital form and as faithfully as possible, the presentation format of a document designed for printing.
PHA. Table created by Heloísa de Almeida Prado, whose symbols are used to organize documents in order of authorship or title. It is an adaptation of the Cutter table for Portuguese names.
Scientific production. Collation (collection and analysis) of all literature on a theme or specific author for purposes of usually quantitative analysis.
TCP/IP Protocol. Standard that defines the communication process between digital equipment using a unique identification number.
Strictu sensu. Postgraduate course at the master’s and doctorate level, which prepares for the academic career.
Full text. Integral content of any originally electronic document or the digitized version of a paper-based material. This material may include journal articles, newspaper articles, government documents, and entire books.
URL. Standard defined for addressing data content via TCP/IP protocol. Internet browsers use the URL to access web pages.
Controlled or structured vocabulary. Collection of related terms, organized according to a methodology, with the purpose of facilitating access to information indexed with them.
