01/21 – Correction treatment, retraction, comments or letter in LILACS

According to the LILACS Methodology, each journal article is represented by a bibliographic record within the database. When a journal article is corrected by an erratum, retraction, comment, or letter, in addition to the article record, a record correcting the previous one should also be created.

Treatment of Errata for Journal Articles

Errata may be published to correct or add text or information that appears in any part of a previously published article. The errata should be labeled and published in a citable form; that is, the errata should appear on a numbered page of an issue of the journal that published the original article. For online journals or online-only content, the errata should be readily discernible in the index of a subsequent issue and should be associated with identifiable pagination or location. Corrections, rectifications, comments, and partial retractions (such as for a single graph, statement, table, or image) for previously published articles are all uniformly considered as errata. (NLM, 2018, online)

Definitions

Errata

A document that acknowledges an error made by a publisher, editor, or author. Typically cites the source where the error occurred, providing complete bibliographic information for its retrieval. In the case of books and monographs, the author’s name, title, imprint, page, and other supporting references should be provided. In the case of journal articles, the author’s name, title, page, and bibliographic reference should be shown. An erratum is also called Errata or Corrigenda. (DeCS, 2021)

Example:

Publication Retraction

A document consisting of a statement published by one or more authors of an article or a book, retracting or disavowing their participation in conducting the research or recording the written results of their study. In indexing, the retraction is submitted to the editor of the publication in which the article appears under the label “retraction” or in the form of a letter. This type of publication refers to the author’s statement of retraction: it should not be confused with RETRACTED PUBLICATION, which labels the retracted publication. (DeCS, 2021)

Example:

Comments

A document consisting of a critique or explanatory note written to discuss, support, or debate a previously published article or another presentation. It can take the form of an article, letter, editorial, etc., and appears in publications under various names: comment, editorial comment, viewpoint, etc. (DeCS, 2021)

Example:

Letter:

A document consisting of manual or printed communication between individuals or between individuals and representatives of organizations. Correspondence can be personal or professional. In medical publications and other scientific publications, the letter is usually from one or more authors to the editor of the journal or book that publishes the subject being commented on or discussed. The Publication Type LETTER often accompanies the Publication Type COMMENT. (DeCS, 2022)
